From one of the breathtaking illustration plates in Ernst Haekel's Art Forms in Nature (1904), the startling range of chiroptera order of mammals is presented. The creature has many gothic associations and takes on amalevolent form in many folkloric traditions.


Explanatory legend added at the bottom identifies all the species in the illustration, which is printed in a striking deep purple colour.
