We are not alone.......
This design is a compendium of UFO sightings compiled from records held at the National Archives.
This may seem a strange choice for a project celebrating folklore, but there is a rich historical lineage of strange sightings with other worldly origins. We only have to look back to reports of the mysterious fairy folk, dwarves, elves and witches and all manner of mythological and folkloric apparitions to understand that the world may not be as it seems.
These sightings may have gradually evolved into the modern manifestation in the form of UFO’s and their occupants. This idea was most fully expressed by Jaques Vallee in his now classic Passport to Magonia (1969), who regarded them as “folklore in the making” and “an age old and world wide myth.”
Even Carl Jung felt compelled to contribute to the UFO debate such was the cultural impact of such phenomenon in the post war period. His 1959 essay Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies suggests that the sightings were an expression of our collective anxieties around imminent nuclear annihilation, celestial portents of end times.
The variety of designs is breath taking, as is the wide dispersal of the locations. This is just a small sample of recorded sightings and abductions which continue to expand over time.
Credible explanations remain elusive but speculation intensifies in the wake of recent US government disclosures. We can await future developments with excitement.
We are not alone!
