The original image is from Heinrich Nollius “Theoria Philosophiae Hermeticae”, published in 1617. The title Rebis refers to dual or double matter and is the culmination of the alchemal process, the unification of opposing attributes. Spirit and Matter, sun and moon, and male and female are reconciled within a single body. All of this is enclosed within the shape of the cosmic egg.
Although composed in the early 17 th century Rebis’s time may have come 400 years later as old dualities begin to disintegrate and merge and a non binary fluidity breaks through into the mainstream. The Divine Hermaphrodite may represent the future.
