The labyrinth has held a fascination for human kind over thousands of years, and indeed there has been something of a reassurgence of interest in the symbol in recent years as a tool of spiritual contemplation. It seems to embody, in microcosm, the journey of life with its’ winding path that takes unexpected turns but eventually reaches the destination.
There are many labyrinth designs and shapes, but the one chosen here takes the form of the classical 7 turn labyrinth, and was said to represent the journey to the 7 visible celestial bodies; Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, The Sun, The Moon , Mercury and Venus.
The design has an elegant flow and balance and is one of the earliest examples. Its’ origin is Mediterranean, most notably in Crete, but it has migrated to around the world and makes an unexplained appearance in Britain on the rocks at Tintagel.
