This design is based on a panel from the Frank's Casket, an exquisite anglo-saxon 8th century chest made from whale bone carved with detailed scenes carved on each pane. It is thought to be of monastic origin from Northumbria.
The casket is now housed in the British Museum, although this particular panel is held and displayed by the Bargello Museum, Florence (a replica is used in British Museum display).
