A hippocamp is a mythical creature with the head and forelegs of a horse, the tail of a fish, and wings. It reputedly pulled the chariot of Poseidon across the heavens.
The design is Roman-British in origin and dates from the 2nd or 3rd century. It is based on a find that is now housed in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
