The image of the elk is inspired by one of the Sikachi Alyan petroglyphs located in the Siberia region of Russia, and is thought to have been created during the Neolithic period. It is carved into basalt rock and located on the shore of the River Amur.
As a source of protein, skins and tools the animal would have been significant in both an economic and ceremonial sense. There is a rich mythology surrounding the deer family of mammals in many cultures across the world. Some of this appears to have migrated across to some of our modern Christmas traditions.
