Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer who experimented with solitary living and a frugal lifestyle in a simple cabin at the side of Walden Pond, a few miles from Concord, Massachusetts. His book describing his experiences, Walden: Life in the Woods published in 1854 became influencial on subsequent writers and commentators on the ills of modern capitalism and proponents of a return to a less complex way of living, more in tune with the natural world.
