The cloven footed, pipe playing Pan is associated with nature, woodland and pasture. Each age seems to bring a reinvention of this deity and his cultural infiltration has been significant. He is difficult to pin down and may induce panic. A trickster of many guises.
The iteration used here is by way of an Aubrey Beardsley illustration for Le Morte d'Arthur, dating from 1893. Although very fine the illustrations to the Arthurian legand have been judged to have only a tenuous connection to the text. However, such was the popularity of the images that they have secured a a life and reputation independent of Malory's text.
