ALL PROCEEDS GO TO CHILDHOPE>ORG>UK
Because of the narrowness of flues young boys were often employed as chimney sweeps apprentices, or climbing boys as they were known, as they were the only people who could work in such small spaces. Many suffered great hardship and were often orphans or paupers and so had little alternative. Cancer of the scrotum was particularly endemic among older boys who had been working for a number of years. Compulsory education and the Chimney Sweeps Act of 1875 meant that the practice finally came to an end.
Sadly children are still exploited today for their cheap labour and an estimated 215 million work in hazardous and abusive conditions. They have been denied a proper childhood and the opportunity for education, and the cost for the future of humanity is incalculable.
