This rendering of Ca'the Yowes (Roud 857) is the first version of the Burns poem from 1789. Dissatisfied with the original, he wrote a second version that was published in 1794. Some have sung the original version, and some the revised.
My favourite recorded performance remains the first version as sublimely sung by Shirley Collins on her Anthems in Eden album from 1969. Its' setting to the recorder was a stroke of genius.

Some also print it as Yowes and some as Ewes, and i'm using the former as to my ears and eyes it sounds more authentically like the Scots language, even if I am a Sassenach.
The cover painting is a section taken from a composition titled Sheep Washing in Glen Lyon completed by Richard Ansdell in 1859. Ansdell was born in Liverpool in 1815 and didn't start painting until he was aged 21. He became hugely successful and painted numerous highland shepherds and their collies while living by Loch Laggan.
