The oldest printed version of this song, in the form of a poem, dates from 1776. Poaching was frequently used by the poorer peasantry to supplement their diet from landowners estates, who employed gamekeepers to protect their land. Confrontations between the two could frequently end in quite brutal violence. The songs' popularity has made it the unofficial county anthem of Lincolnshire. The songs cinematic debut came in Tom Brown's School Days in 1940 when it was sung by a group of victorious rugby players.
The song also gained some notoriety when two bars from it were used as an interval signal on a station that transmitted from Cyprus from the mid-1970s. The Lincolnshire Poacher station was supposedly used by the British Secret Service to broadcast to undercover agents. If you think i'm a paranoid fantasist you can listen for yourself below.

The painting is titled The Young Poacher and was completed by William Hemsley in 1874.
